Long Live The Arctic
everything was in reverse
no pills or electroshock cures
by a doctor, chiropractor or a nurse
could be prescribed to keep children alive
thousands were driven away in a hearse
wiped out in the span of a blink
humans were becoming extinct
just like the polar bear's Arctic home was about to disappear
man had no shelter, none in the east, west, far or near
man's food source began to vanish by the tons
gardens stopped producing beans, corn and rice
not a pod, not a stalk, not a grain, not a one
the mega stores all began to go
Wal-mart, Sam's, Kroger and even Oprah's Costco
the trees were leafless, thus no carbon dioxide
causing shortages of oxygen and a change in the tide
the moon lost sight of the flow of time
there was no guarantee the sun would follow behind
but when he did the haze was so hot
the few people left wished he would not
what were the polar bears, great white whales and bald eagles to do?
they captured the few remaining humans and began to breed them in the zoo
marking each cage "homosapien" closely guarded by apes
who mocked them and tossed them pennies,
who dressed them in spandex and super hero capes
there was batman and robin and the men in black
there was a cage marked "attention deficit disorders"
and a family of "Mexicans in a red Cadillac"
one marked with "authentic graffiti by gangs"
one marked "family of rednecks" with jokes written in slang
there was a cage marked "politically correct"
where the visiting animals took their hats off in respect
it had every kind, two of each
a pair with slanted eyes, 2 blonds that could yodel
two surfers that looked like they stepped from a beach
families of healthy animal tourists paraded by
as their cubs and ponies pointed asking why
"what happened to man and all he owned"
cried out a healthy baby panda all the way from Hong Kong?"
"Oh the answer isn't easy said the gorilla tour guide
but it boils down to greed, economics,
and individual rights they swore with pride to abide
there wasn't just one thing that did them in
bad fuel choices, addiction to plastics, war
its hard to say where to begin
there were groups that killed each other,
women died of aides causing fewer mothers
some became extinct due to designer drugs
poison water from oil spills, methane pollutants and drudge
my friends you've so attentive" said their knowledgeable guide
"i want to show you a secret place, but no cameras allowed inside"
upon entering the cave the animals snorted, bleated, tweeted, cooed, and peeped
at the secret place the guide had brought them to take a peek
huddled around a table like a c.m. coolidge painting
seemingly drunk and playing cards
was Elvis, the kennedys, dr. king, jr, michael jackson and that shakespeare bard.
the animals oo-ed and ah-ed and burst into applaud
"long live the arctic"
i sat up in a panic and screamed
then wept thanking God it was only a dream
i stumbled to my computer dejected and downhearted
googled, researched then donated to a website that said "help save the arctic"
